A Grand Evening for Scholarships with the South Texas Independent School District

10/24/2018

MCALLEN, TX (October 23, 2018) — For the third consecutive year, PlainsCapital Bank served as a flagship sponsor of the Education Foundation of South Texas Independent School District (STISD) annual fall Soiree for Scholarships, bringing area business and community leaders together for an evening of fun and food in a ‘Celebration for Education.’

More than 200 attendees and sponsors of this year’s event, held Oct. 18 at PlainsCapital’s Trenton branch, helped raise thousands of dollars in support of educational scholarships for STISD students. The evening’s festivities welcomed civic and business leaders, STISD board and foundation members, and community members from STISD’s three-county district and beyond, as they sampled gourmet wines and cheeses and bid on new and one-of-a-kind silent auction items. The event’s proceeds will help fund college scholarships and student enrichment programs.

“Education is fundamental to the development of any economy—regional or otherwise,” said Yvonne Trevino, PlainsCapital Bank senior vice president and wealth management market manager. “We believe in supporting higher education initiatives that create opportunities for our young people here in the Valley. As a partner of the Education Foundation of STISD, PlainsCapital was excited to once again play host to the Foundation’s annual Soiree at our beautiful Trenton location.”

Now in its 14thyear, the Education Foundation of STISD was created in 2004 to support the district through educational scholarships and leadership opportunities for STISD students. The Education Foundation annually awards more than $55,000 in college scholarship and enrichment funds to students enrolled at STISD’s six campuses: South Texas Preparatory Academy and South Texas Business, Education, & Technology Academy, both in Edinburg; Rising Scholars Academy of South Texas in San Benito; South Texas Academy for Medical Professions in Olmito; and The Science Academy of South Texas and South Texas High School for Health Professions, both in Mercedes.

Since its inception, the Education Foundation has raised more than $600,000 in scholarships and enrichment opportunities for over 700 STISD students in Cameron, Hidalgo, and Willacy counties.

“Corporate partnerships play a vital role in our ability to fundraise,” said Patricia Villaseñor, Education Foundation of STISD executive director. “Without business partners like PlainsCapital Bank, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do—provide financial help to families in need, creating opportunities for our students by supporting and advancing higher education goals.”
